The Best of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac

The Best of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac

I have loved all these tracks from when they were first released and I was a schoolboy,I managed to see them live twice around that time, at the Ulster Hall in Belfast, I generally don't listen to that much older music and tend to move on,usually staying quite contempory, but just about everything on this CD sounds just as great as it always did!

The War Of The World (Remixed & Remastered Double Album)

The War Of The World (Remixed & Remastered Double Album)

I bought the special edition with the book, DVD, CDs with outtakes, auditions, missing pieces etc. But I also wanted to hear The War Of The Worlds in ultra high quality SACD.

Well, I feel let down. The quiet parts get cut, e.g. echoes pop in and out. It seems the recording engineer has cut all sound below a certain level from the mix tapes.

Going back to my original CD version, there is certainly more noise but there is also a hell of lot more depth to the sound. Playing them side by side, I hear a complete change in the mixes right the way through. I noticed that the vocals of the SACD are muted by comparison to the CD version.

This is not what SACD is about, this recording sounds like an early 80s digital recording, very reminiscent of those old Naxos classical CDs that sound terrible on a decent system, compressed and fading to silence abruptly in quiet passages (you should hear breathing, fumbling musicians, cars driving past outside etc. in a non-studio classical recording)

Here We Stand

Here We Stand

The most uplifting album I've heard for a while. This album is packed with boisterous, singalong classics that fulfill the promise of Costello Music. This is a better album. The Fratellis have obviously gained in confidence and there is evidence of abundant songwriting and technical skill here. On first listen, I was struck by musical reminders of Artic Monkeys (My Friend John), Suede(Lupe Brown), Waterboys and Kasabian (Tell Me a Lie), for example. This was a departure from Costello Music which had a consistent Slade feel. The variety of styles is welcome and promises even better for the future because it suggests a good understanding of what it takes to write great songs.

Overloaded: The Singles Collection

Overloaded: The Singles Collection

I can't think of any reason for why people gives this album three or even one star??? How can you critisize an album which is made up by previous hit singles. After my opinion a Single Collection is never bad, and especially not this.
Here are all the favorite Sugababes songs gathered on one cd. Could it get any better?! No, of course not!!

Every single track on this cd is splendid; the no 1 hits Push the Button, Hole in the Head, Round,Round, and Freak like Me gives you a good headach. And not too mension the hit ballads Too lost in you, Stronger, and Ugly. And the new and sexy single Easy gives the single collection the final touch.
But we must not forget the other top-charts songs that is to find here; Red Dress, In the Middle, Shape, Caught in a Moment, Overload,Run for Cover and Good to be Gone(the second new and groovie song)

THIS GREATEST HIT ALBUM IS A MUUSST FOR EVERYONE WHO BREATHS!!!

I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too

I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too

Believe me, it's usually the other way round. Usually I have nothing but praise for the man and his show that introduce me to so many fantastic artists. But in the case of this album, seeing Martha Wainwright perform on that show before purchasing `I Know You're Married, but I've Got Feelings Too' has ruined me, because if I hadn't seen her perform live I would have been blissfully unaware that in the right form this collection of songs presents an absolutely incredible portrait of a uniquely charismatic singer/song-writer. But not when they're delivered with decidedly less passion on an over-produced album that is not a proper showcase for these beautifully written songs and the tortured/passionate voice that always performs to perfect spine-tingling effect in the right setting.

The prime example is track 7- `So Many Friends'- my favourite song when I heard it performed by Martha on the show. An incredibly subtle song that soared into a gloriously ironic chorus on which Martha's voice was tortured and triumphant in equal measure. On the album version her voice dwindles to a pathetic whimper, only then to be drowned out by unnecessary instrumental accompaniment. Why (I ask of nobody in particular) was her voice not allowed to be heard in the true glory evident in all her live performances? It's a mystery to me.

This is emblematic of the album as a whole, but that's not to say there aren't some really cool tracks. Such as track 3- `Jesus and Mary' (7/10) and track 8- `In the Middle of the Night' (8/10) and track 9- `The George Song' (7/10). But I personally could have done without the musical flourishes and would have much preferred a starker offering that boiled down these songs to their most natural elements i.e. Martha's strong voice and her exceptionally emotional delivery. I haven't heard Martha's first album, so going by the comments of previous reviewers I'll be buying that very shortly in order to discover whether it's a better showcase for this infectiously eccentric artist.

The rating might be needlessly harsh and this album is undoubtedly a grower with inspiration and catchy tunes by the bucket-load, but there's no escaping that almost tangible disappointment in this album that just doesn't do justice to Martha's talent.

Pink Floyd - Pulse (Two Discs) (DVD) [1994]

Pink Floyd - Pulse (Two Discs) (DVD) [1994]

I discovered Pink Floyd quite late in life, but better late then never they say. This is absolutely my favourite DVD/CD. If I to choose between this one and all the others I have, this would be the one!

Dig Out Your Soul: +DVD

Dig Out Your Soul: +DVD

I've been an Oasis fan since I was 11 - I'm now 24 - and agree with the previous reviewer re: people's expectations. Oasis are never going to suddenly completely change their style to try and please fickle magazine critics. They know what their fans like and they know what works for them. That's not to say Dig Out Your Soul is identical to previous albums, it does have plenty of new ideas and sounds - try listening for all the different sound effects they use in the songs. They're older, wiser and it shows in the lyrics. Liam in particular is really developing as a songwriter. I'm Outta Time is one of my favourites on the album, along with The Shock of the Lightning, the opener Bag It Up, (Get Off Your) High Horse Lady, Falling Down, Ain't Got Nothin' and To Be Where There's Life. The DVD is well worth having too, I really recommend you buy this 2-disc version of the album if you can. It's a real treat and a worthy addition to anyone's Oasis collection.

Estelle has a good voice no doubt about it and American Boy is one of the songs of the summer. Sadly, such elements have failed to contribute to a memorable album which feels like a rushed cash in with production values so tired, you can ever hear them yawn!

American Boy sounded really fresh with a brilliant use of horns but the rest of the album is just derivative R&B that could have been produced by any female artist within the genre. Estelle struggles to stamp her own identity on any of the tracks and she just sounds like a vocalist singing someone else's work. Generally there is little passion and soul in this, I found myself barely noticing any differences between tracks. As a result, it feels more like lounge music than anything else.

There are highlights as the first three tracks are very good and are funnily enough the ones plugged on the case promo sticker. Then we have to wait until the duet with John Legend called You Are before anything interesting of note is heard. Nothing is bad, but I have so many albums in my collection like this and those artists do it better. The whole thing left me cold and it plods along at an anaemic pace, it felt like it ran for about 3 hours!
