O Brother, Where Art Thou?

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

I'm not from the US, my family hail from Kashmir and I was born in the UK, grew up listening to punk rock but WOW! The soundtrack literally drips with the era and place it hails from; every time I hear a snippet I swear I can feel the heat and smell the wheat - so amazing!

Mariah is absolutely brilliant, more powerful than Whitney, more soulful than Celine, and, obviously, better than Britney. AMAZING!

Hannah Montana

Hannah Montana

This CD isn't just songs from Hannah Montana, but it has various other tracks from other singers or bands. I got it on Valentines day 2008 and listened to it that same night - I couldn't stop dancing!! I'd definately say it was worth buying and I'd reccomend it to anyone who is thinking about buying it. And it contains the lyrics aswell, so you can sing along to it when you're feeling lazy!

All The Lost Souls

All The Lost Souls

This album is twice as good as his previous effort and I have therefore given it two stars. His voice is still annoying though. Maybe someone should suggest to him (nicely) he does an instrumental album. Yikes..

Everything Is Borrowed

Everything Is Borrowed

I just can't understand why this album has got some bad reviews as it is Skinners best album by far.

There are some excellent tracks especially "Everything Is Borrowed" "On The Edge Of A Cliff" "Escapist" and "Heaven For The Weather" (which is irresistibly bouncy and singalong). Skinners softer side appears on the lovely "Strongest Person I Know".

Musically this is by far Skinners most accessible album with some really catchy tunes not just the hard beats we find so often on the other albums.

Lyrically, there are some gems but there are also some clunkers. However there are a couple of tracks where the theme seems to be uncomfortably anti-christian and this leaves a bit of a bad taste.

Its been on the car cd player for ages now, though I do keep flicking to the half dozen excellent tracks.

The Very Best of Jake Thackray

The Very Best of Jake Thackray

As a tiny lad in the late 60s I used to love Jake's tv appearances - I loved the sound of his guitar playing and his deadpan delivery and his vocals used to have me in stitches, though I couldn't have understood 99% of the lyrics! Then last year, four decades later, I read an article on the release of Jake's boxed set in Mojo magazine. Straight onto Amazon I ordered myself a copy of the Very Best of Jake Thackray. What a fabulous delight. I have since ordered another five copies which I've sent out to various friends, and here I am on Amazon again, ordering another three copies for further friends. Spreading the word. Jake, you're fab, unique and wonderful. There will never be anyone else like you. Wishing you were here.

If you are new to the world of Guns N' Roses I urge you to go and pick up Appetite for Destruction and play the hell out of it. This is a good CD if perhaps you just want a mix CD for the car or whatever, but there is less of their groundbreaking debut album on here then I would have liked. Songs like Rocket Queen especially deserves a spot on this CD.

Some People Have Real Problems

Some People Have Real Problems

As someone who had managed to avoid Zero Seven and Sia until now, this is a revelation. Intrigued by a stunning performance on Jools Holland's "Later", I decided to gamble on the album. A worthwhile gamble? Oh,yes! What we have here is a real singer, with passion and power combined with quirky rhythms and lovely melodies, sometimes jaunty, sometimes offbeat, but often heartbreaking. Reference points? Kate Bush for sure- but she's no imitation. her yearning, emotional vocals sometimes bring the Pretenders to mind- but then, when you listen to her version of "I go to Sleep",included here, all you hear is Sia.

Unique and engaging, full of that oddness which makes Tori Amos and Bjork so appealing, yet more grounded than either of those. And her voice can soar with real shattering emotional power. On the best of songs (here, for me, "Soon we will be found" is world-class, sending shivers down the spine)- she stakes her claim to being the best female vocalist of the past ten years.
If you've never heard Sia before, get this Cd. Listen to it. And marvel at a world where mediocre singers are lauded to the heavens and true inspiration lies hidden away. Genius!
(and don't miss the hidden bonus track "Buttons" at the end of the cd- just let "Lullaby run on, and you'll have a jaunty jazzy dancey treat in store)
This CD deserves as many stars as there are in the heavens- but let's give it five for now. Who knows what she'll do next year?
